There are many strange legends about the tengu along Mount Takao's hiking path. One concerns the "octopus cedar." One day, the tengu in Takao were working to build a path to the top of the mountain when they came across a huge cedar tree with roots that were blocking the path. The tengu decided to pull the roots out the first thing next morning. But when they returned the next day, the roots were curled up like the legs of an octopus. The tree had decided to "behave" and pulled in its roots so as not to interfere with the work of the tengu.
For those of us who can't read that sign it says Dango. Dango is that treat on a stick you can see in the background.
This was such a beautiful hike! It was raining but the rain stays up above the trees. Down by us it was just misty and green!Tyler, Camron, Satoru and Aoi.
The monkeys use to be all around. They have now put most of them into a sanctuary. They were so fun to watch. They say you can still see some out in the wild sometimes but we weren't lucky enough to see any. Tyler did see one, but it was roadkill....how sad!

There are lots of spider webs. Luckily no big, scary spiders that we saw.
